Squirrel Den Boxes

Squirrel Den Boxes

Bi-State Wildlife rescues, rehabilitates and re-releases 100+ sick, injured, and orphaned baby squirrels each year. Each group of squirrels that we release are put back in the wild with a den box to shelter them in their new wild world. We introduce den boxes into their cages about 2-4 weeks before release. This allows our squirrels to ‘cache’ food and bedding materials into their den box that they will get to take with them when they’re released. During this time we also feed them a lot of in-shell nuts that are easy to stash in their box for later. (They also stash perishable items like broccoli and mushrooms, but that’s okay too!) On release day, we box up the squirrels in their box while they are sleeping and hang their box on a screw that we drill into a tall tree, at least 10ft off the ground. With their den boxes, they can venture out on their own time frame to explore the new world around them, and they’ll always have a place to call home as they get to know the ways of being wild again.

There are several plans available for making den boxes for squirrels. We link to a few of them here. One box is not better than another. They all make perfectly suitable homes for squirrels to live in. If you live in Missouri or Illinois, just give us a call at 1-855-945-3435 or email us at help@wildlifehotline.com when you have a box completed and we will direct you to the closest place to drop it off with one of our rehabbers. If you live outside our area, visit www.ahnow.org to find the rehabber closest to you that will be just as appreciative as we are for all of your hard work! Every rehabber is in need of squirrel den boxes, no matter where they are located! Thank you for your help!
